Or little computing tricks and hacks

VMware play

These are straight forward instructions for installing VMware Play in Ubuntu to run virtual machines. This is necessary to run a virtual OpenERP server.

  1. Download the bundle from here. Then make sure that all the dependencies are installed:

    sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r`

  2. To check that they are installed, you can run

    dpkg -s packagename or dpkg-query -l packagename

  3. Add the execution permission on the bundle file:

    $ chmod +x VMware-Player-*.bundle

  4. Then just run it and follow the instructions:

    $ sudo ./VMware-Player-*.bundle

  5. (From http://linuxg.net/install-vmware-player-on-ubuntu-13-04/)

    However, after running the server and virtual machine once, the machine stopped…

    vmware-prob

    If I pressed install, it would just crashed. Given that I couldn’t even run it, I decided to uninstall and reinstall it. And that seemed to have done the trick.

    To uninstall:
    vmware-installer -u vmware-player
